Tips for Replacing a Jeep Wrangler Thermostat

Why Replace the Thermostat?

If your Jeep Wrangler is running hotter than normal, your thermostat may need to be replaced. The thermostat helps regulate the engine cooling system, so if it isn't working properly, your engine can quickly overheat. Replacing the thermostat is a relatively easy task and can be done at home with the right tools.

What You Will Need

Before you begin, make sure you have the following tools and supplies: a new thermostat, a Phillips head screwdriver, a socket wrench set, a coolant refill kit, and a replacement thermostat gasket.

Steps to Replace the Thermostat

Step 1: Locate the Thermostat

The thermostat is located on the driver’s side of the engine compartment. It is a small, round metal device located near the top of the engine block.

Step 2: Remove the Old Thermostat

Using a socket wrench, remove the bolts that secure the thermostat in place. Once the bolts are removed, the thermostat can be easily lifted out of the engine block. Be sure to save the gasket for the new thermostat.

Step 3: Install the New Thermostat

Carefully place the new thermostat into the engine block and use the socket wrench to secure it in place. Once it is secure, replace the gasket and then replace the bolts. Make sure the bolts are firmly tightened.

Step 4: Refill the Coolant

Once the thermostat is installed, use a coolant refill kit to refill the engine coolant. This should be done carefully and according to the instructions in the kit. Once the coolant has been refilled, start the engine to check for any leaks.
